Cramming is the practice of billing a consumer for a service or product they did not want and in some cases did not even receive. These charges can be for an unauthorized service or just one that was misrepresented by misleading or deceptive tactics. Cramming is most often associated with local phone companies, but can also be done by your long distance company. These charges usually appear on your bill with very general descriptions. For example, "service fee", "minimum usage fee", or simply "other fees". If you find you have been crammed there are a couple of things you can do. First, you should contact the company you think has done the cramming and ask them to explain the charges. If the charges are not correct, ask them how the incorrect charges can be removed from your bill. If you cannot get the charges removed you may need to file a complaint. If the charges are for a service within your own state you can file a complaint to your states public service commission. If it is between states or internationally, or for non-telephone services on your phone bill you can file a complaint with the fcc. |
